A Unpaid Professional Internships
A custom designed period of unpaid training within a company in Australia, working alongside industry professionals in supervised environment.
A professional internship is available in all industries, however specialized and anywhere in Australia. Popular industries are IT, finance, marketing, engineering, business administration and accounting.
The role, responsibilities and work environment will depend entirely on the three factors:
1) The level of experience (both academic and professional) of the applicant. An applicant with a highly specialized level of knowledge can expect to be involved in specific projects to which they will be applying their industry/technical skills quite directly. After the initial supervision period they will most likely be working independently, with the possibility to take a lot of initiative in their role and perform a relatively key function within an area of the company (albeit it temporary). They will gain considerable insight into the application of their knowledge and experience from home, in a new and different environment.
A school leaver, or first year student with only some rudimentary knowledge and interest in their field, can expect to be working on more general day to day tasks, assisting members staff with their workload, and on tasks that are part of a wider project or function of the company, but not integral to it. They will be more heavily supervised and have less responsibility, however they will constrantly learning new business skills and functions which they have not previously been exposed to. In all cases, the internship is tailored so as to reflect and build on the existing level of each intern, making it a meaningful and interesting role.
2) The length of an internship. Longer internships ensure a more involved role, and greater responsibility and autonomy for the intern. The knowledge gained will be more specialized. Short internships give general, first exposure to an industry.
3) The industry. Certain industries will require an intern to be heavily supervised and possibly take a more observational role, whilst sitll gaining an excellent introduction to the differences and practices of that industry in Australia as compares with the intern's home country. Such areas would include any role within health care, education, and possibly social services and scientific research.
The work environment will differ greatly from industry to industry. Companies are medium sized companies and larger, where an intern can expect to be in an office environment, or out with clients. However, many interns will find themselves based in non 'business' settings; perhapsa laboratory or research institute, a classroom or university, a national park or animal park, hospital or a theatre/art gallery.
